DNS - What is this technology and why we need it

Domain Name System (DNS) is an Internet technology for recognizing the IP addresses of websites by their name. Its operation is based on the principle of matching, when you enter the name of any website in the address bar, the web browser contacts the DNS server, which matches this name with the IP address in its database and creates a connection to the requested page.

Best DNS for Web Surfing

Most Internet service providers create their own DNS servers, but unfortunately, it is not always possible to find the required name / IP address match in their databases. In such cases, the request is redirected to root DNS servers with larger databases, which in turn slows down the connection speed and takes longer to access the desired site. Therefore, power users use DNS servers from web giants such as Google Corporation. Using DNS 8.8.8.8 or 8.8.4.4 you will get faster access to sites than with the provided servers of your provider.

The purpose of DNS on a router

If your device is configured to automatically obtain an IP address and DNS server, then when connecting to a router to access the Internet, you will use the router's DNS. Therefore, changing the DNS server on the router not only increases the connection speed but also saves time that would have to be spent changing the DNS settings on each device in your network separately. We will describe further how to perform a quick DNS change on a router using popular devices as an example.

Asus RT-AC51

  1. We connect to the settings of the router through a web browser. To do this, write your choice of 192.168.1.1 or router.asus.com in the address bar and press Enter.

Сonclusion

Before changing DNS servers, you must be sure that their quality is better than the ones you are currently using. Be very careful when you are going to use DNS IP addresses. Modern routers allow, in addition to making changes manually, choosing to use one of the many DNS services with access to root databases, this option can also significantly increase the speed of connection to landing pages, in addition, it allows you to try several options without unnecessary effort.
